Do I Need to Take the Placement Test?

There are multiple ways to prove that you are ready for college-level English and Math. These ways are listed below. Some students may still need to take the Placement Test.

The criteria below is not intended for high school students dual enrolling for the first time.

I am a High School student dual enrolling for the first time.

For specific placement requirements needed to dual enroll, please contact your High School Career Coach, Guidance Counselor or the High School Outreach Office at (540) 868-7149.

I took English as a Second Language and/or ESL Resource classes in High School and will graduate this year or have graduated in the last 5 years.

To see if you need the placement test follow these steps:

1. Contact your High School for UNOFFICIAL transcripts.

2. Check your final, cumulative High School GPA.

English

  • You WILL need to take the English ACCUPLACER placement test.
  • The test is free and must be taken BEFORE your orientation session.
  • Click here to see the testing center hours.

Math

  • If you took Algebra I AND have a GPA of 2.7 or higher, you DO NOT* need to take the Math Placement Test.
  • If your GPA is below this score you WILL need to take the Math Placement Test before your orientation session.
  • *Depending on your Program at LFCC you may be advised to take additional math placement testing to meet your Math requirements.

3. BEFORE your orientation session, send your UNOFFICIAL High School transcript to LFCC Admissions & Records OR meet with your High School Career Coach.

If you do not meet the above scores, you WILL need to take the Placement Test for the portion you do not meet before your registration appointment. Click here to find out more information about the test.

I did not graduate from a high school in the United States.

English

You WILL need to take the English ACCUPLACER placement test.

The Accuplacer test is designed for the following students:

  • Students who speak their native language most often at home
  • Those who have lived in the US less than 6 years
  • Those that did not attend high school in the US

Math

You WILL need to take the Math placement test.

The test is free and must be taken BEFORE your orientation session.

I will graduate from High School this year or I have graduated from High School in the past 5 years.

I have taken my GED since 2014.

To see if you need the placement test follow these steps:

1. Check your GED scores.

2. Go to www.ged.com to get a copy of your scores.

English

  • 165 or higher you DO NOT need to take the English Placement Test.
  • Below that score, you WILL need to take the English Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.

Math

  • 155 or higher you DO NOT* need to take the Math Placement Test.
  • Below that score, you WILL need to take the Math Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.
  • *Depending on your Program at LFCC you may be advised to take additional placement testing to meet your Math requirements.

3. BEFORE your orientation session, send GED scores to LFCC Admissions & Records

4. If you took your GED before 2014 you will need to take the English and Math placement tests before your orientation session. Click here to prepare for your placement tests.

1. Check your SAT scores.

2. Go to www.collegeboard.com to get a copy of your SAT scores.

English

SAT AFTER March 2016:

  • 460 or higher on Evidence Based Reading & Writing section you DO NOT need to take the English Placement Test.
  • Below that score, you WILL need to take the English Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.

SAT BEFORE March 2016:

  • 500 or higher on BOTH Critical Reading & Writing sections you DO NOT need to take the English Placement Test.
  • Below that score on one or both sections, you WILL need to take the English Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.

Math

SAT AFTER March 2016:

  • 510 or higher Math section score you DO NOT* need to take the Math Placement test.
  • Below that score, you WILL need to take the Math Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.

SAT BEFORE March 2016:

  • 520 or higher Math section score you DO NOT* need to take the Math Placement test.
  • Below that score, you WILL need to take the Math Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.
  • *Depending on your Program at LFCC you may be advised to take additional placement testing to meet your Math requirements.

3. BEFORE your orientation session, send SAT scores to Admissions & Records at LFCC or meet with your High School Career Coach.

  • 19 or higher Math score you DO NOT* need to take the Math Placement test.
  • Below that score, you WILL need to take the Math Placement Test BEFORE your orientation session.
  • *Depending on your Program at LFCC you may be advised to take additional placement testing to meet your Math requirements.

3. BEFORE your orientation session, send SAT scores to LFCC Admissions & Records or meet with your High School Career Coach.

I have taken an English and/or a Math class at another college.

Both Math and English must be met by either transfer credits or placement testing. If you have met the requirements for only one subject, you must still take the placement test for the other. To see if you need to take the English or Math Placement Test follow these steps:

English

  • Review your college transcript.
  • If you received a grade of A, B, C, or S in a college level English class, you DO NOT need to take the English Placement Test.

Math

  • Review your college transcript.
  • If you received a grade of A, B, C, or S in a college level Math class, you DO NOT* need to take the Math Placement Test.
  • *Depending on your Program at LFCC you may be advised to take additional placement testing to meet your Math requirements.

Please complete these steps before your Orientation session.

1. Print an UNOFFICIAL copy of your transcript and bring it with you to your orientation session

2. Send all OFFICIAL college transcripts to LFCC Admissions & Records.

3. Complete the Credit for Prior Learning Form and send to LFCC Admissions & Records.

  • If you placed MTE 1 or higher you DO NOT* need to take the English Placement Test.
  • If you placed ABE or BSK 1 please take the Math placement test BEFORE your orientation session.
  • If you are unsure of your scores, call the LFCC Advising Office.
  • *Depending on your Program at LFCC you may be advised to take additional placement testing to meet your Math requirements.

I have graduated from college with an Associates, Bachelors, Masters or Doctoral Degree.

You DO NOT need to take the English or Math Placement Test. Please complete these steps before your Registration Appointment.

1. Complete the Credit for Prior Learning Form and send to LFCC Admissions & Records.

2. Bring a copy of your UNOFFICIAL transcripts to your registration appointment.

3. If you plan to transfer in credits, please send an OFFCIAL copy to LFCC Admissions & Records Office.

You will not be able to register for classes if you do not submit your transcript.
