Virginia Placement Test (VPT)
What Is the VPT?
The VPT is an untimed, computerized test that helps your college evaluate your skills and place you into appropriate courses. The VPT offers tests in reading, math, and a writing essay. You will receive your VPT results immediately upon completion of testing, and your score report will include placement messages informing you what courses you should take and how to register.
VPT English Test:
This test includes a multiple choice reading test and a written essay graded along five domains: organization; focus, development, and support; vocabulary; sentence structure; and mechanics. Based on placement results, students will be placed into college level English; ENF 3 (which requires concurrent enrollment with college level English); ENF 2; ENF 1; or Below the Floor, thereby requiring a different level of remediation to be provided by the College or local Adult Basic Education programs.
Accuplacer – ESL
What Is the Accuplacer?
The Accuplacer is an untimed, computerized test that helps your college evaluate your skills and place you into appropriate courses. The Accuplacer includes three tests: Reading, Sentence Meaning, and Language Use. You will receive your Accuplacer results immediately upon completion of testing, and your score report will include placement messages informing you what courses you should take and how to register.
Students whose first language is not English & any student requesting ESL coursework should take the Accuplacer English test.
The Accuplacer test is designed for the following students:
- Students who speak their native language most often at home
- Those who have lived in the US less than 6 years
- Those that did not attend high school in the US
Contact the Advising Office at (540) 868-7110 on the Middletown campus, (540) 351-1507 on the Fauquier campus with questions about which English placement test is the appropriate one for you.
Accuplacer English Test:
This test has three multiple choice sections, with 20-22 questions in each section. The test covers reading skills (identifying main/supporting ideas, paraphrasing, and making inferences), grammar (verb tenses, adjectives, adverbs, nouns, and clauses), and mechanics for writing (punctuating, sentence combining, and avoiding common sentence mistakes). Based on the results of the test, students will be placed into ENG 111, ESL 95 (which requires co-enrollment in ENG 111), ESL level 40 (which includes ESL 41, 42, 43, and 45), ESL 30 (which includes ESL 31, 32, 33, and 35), or ESL level 0 (which means students need to register for ESL classes through the Northern Shenandoah Valley Adult Education Program).
VPT – Math Test:
Multiple-choice items in each of mathematics readiness areas test the following:
- Operations – Mastery of operations and basic concepts with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebraic basics and order of operations.
- Equations – Applying sequences of first degree and linear equations, inequalities, systems of linear equations in one and two variables, and quadratic equations.
