Student may enroll in the following courses to meet literature elective requirements. The courses can be taken in any order.
ENG 245: Major British Writers
Sample the touchstones of today’s British canon though the superlative drama, poetry, and fiction of Britain’s greats, such as Shakespeare, Swift, Austen, Wordsworth, Dickens, Wilde, Eliot, and Beckett.
ENG 255: Major Writers of World Literature
Take a world-class cruise through some of the most famous writers in the world, from ancient times to present, including authors like Homer, Dante, Rumi, Murasaki, Cervantes, Shakespeare, Dostoevsky, Kafka, and Marquez. (Should satisfy a global studies course requirement for transfer universities.)
ENG 241: American Literature to 1914
Take a sweeping tour of America’s literary past, from Colonial Jamestown to World War I, featuring early explorers; pioneer women poets; Revolutionary War patriots; masters of the fanciful and faraway; heart-wrenching slave narratives; and writers of the ordinary and the commonplace.
ENG 242: American Literature from 1914 to the Present
Explore modern American Literature, decade-by decade, starting with the Nineteen Teens to the Roaring Twenties to the Threadbare Thirties and continuing all the way to the Turbulent but Creative Sixties, the Disco Seventies, and ending with the Dot.com Nineties and the current Tweenies/Twenty-Tens.
