Great Expectations Program
In 2008, the Virginia Foundation for Community College Education launched an initiative aimed at improving the lives of youth in the Virginias foster care system. Hear from VCCS Chancellor Dubois
Great Expectations helps Virginia’s foster youth complete high school, gain access to a community college education and transition successfully from the foster care system to living independently. Great Expectations provides a Campus Coach to support young adults’ ages 16-24 prepare for college and career readiness at LFCC.

Youth who pursue postsecondary education and professional training are better able to hold a job, obtain health care and make a contribution to society. Virginia has the highest percentage of teens aging out of the foster care system without a permanent home – ranking last of all states in the U.S. Currently, over 54% of foster youth who age out of the system at 18 will become homeless or unstably housed.
