Instructor, Program Lead for the Science Department

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Science Department at Lord Fairfax Community College (LFCC). This website will provide you with information about the science department, courses, faculty, and events at our three campuses. Our faculty members are dedicated teachers who are committed to the academic development and success of each student who steps into our classrooms and labs. We currently serve about 1,400 students who are taking science classes at the Middletown and Luray campuses and several hundred more at our Fauquier campus.

A hallmark of the high-quality education that our department offers is the importance placed on doing science, not just memorizing facts and figures. Critical thinking is an integral basis of the discovery of science and scientific principles. Many of the classes include practice in technical and scientific communication skills with writing assignments, student presentations and artistic design.  As a department, we are constantly revising and adapting our teaching methods to improve the outcome for students that reflect the future of science and scientific practices. Many students remark that their time spent in the laboratory actually doing science was the highlight of their experience in science education. Our hybrid and online courses also offer students options in their educational choices. Our talented instructors have adopted innovative techniques and technologies that challenge students to do and think science with practical methods and results.

Science is an exciting, challenging, and dynamic discipline and the potential economic impact for graduates in science fields may be greater than in any other field. In the next decade, almost all of the thirty fastest-growing occupations will require at least some background in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Currently Virginia lacks the STEM graduates that are needed to stay competitive in a global economy. In Virginia, STEM skills have stayed in demand even through the economic downturn (Vital Signs – Virginia).

Lord Fairfax students that earn an Associate’s Degree in Science will leave with a solid background in science that will pave the way for either a rewarding certificate program or transfer to a 4-year college or university.
