“I am an explorer, an adventurer, a stargazer. When I think about the future and what I hope to accomplish, it’s not just one thing. I aspire to be an astronaut, to study particles at the Large Hadron Collider. I want to compose music and build things…” wrote Jackie Bertone in her application for the NASA Community College Aerospace Scholars (NCAS) program. Jackie is a student at Lord Fairfax Community College’s (LFCC) Fauquier Campus and now a NCAS Scholar. She will complete her Associate Degree in General Studies at LFCC in May 2015 and hopes to study physics at Virginia Tech.

Besides taking classes at LFCC, she is working on a presentation with her current cohort at NCAS, planning a Mars mission and designing a 3D rover model. She says, “I love working with people that are so passionate about science.”

A resident of Rixeyville, VA, Jackie proclaims, “LFCC has been a great steppingstone to discover more about myself and the direction in which I want to go.” She recalls a physics class at LFCC with Professor Clelia LaMonica; “I was very inspired during a lecture on the electromagnetic spectrum and waves. Professor LaMonica ran across the classroom moving her arm in the air to show how light works.”

As Jackie pursues her dreams and passion for learning, she hopes that her philosophy is followed by others, “Don’t be afraid to fail, and don’t always believe you have to be the best at something. It’s not what you know, but how much you want to know.”
